Put in downstream of the Lake George Dam, from parking lot here:

We traveled from Lake George Dam (Hobart) to Clay Street Bridge (Lake Station) on Saturday, June 26, 2010.

Overall it was a beautiful trip and a nice wide river with lots of wildlife to see. Many houses along the river but some stretches of just woods. We stopped at the Bicentennial Park in Lake Station and there is a nice Veteran's Memorial and covered foot bridge there.

WATERFALL/DAM WARNING:
Warning, there is a 10 foot waterfall that cannot be travelled over in a canoe, in Lake Station right after the Liverpool Road bridge when traveling downstream (Northwest on the river, towards Lake Michigan).
The ripples from the waterfall can be seen on this satellite image, just downstream of this point on google maps:

41.564048, -87.292874 (+41 33' 50.57", -87 17' 34.35")

You know you are close when you see some abandoned mobile homes (trailers) on the right side, with insulation falling out of the walls. Beware and portage to the right. We pulled the canoe up the bank there, walked down Riverside Drive, and put the canoe back in downstream of the waterfall.

Only significant log jam encountered was between the Central Ave Bridge and Clay Street bridge. But we were able to break it up a bit and then power over it.
