Crawfordsville resident Dick Munro has self-published a book describing his trips down Sugar Creek. The book is worth buying for its local history. Here's a link to the book on Amazon, though I think you can also get it at some of the Sugar Creek outfitters:

Having urged readers to buy the book, I have to add a couple of cautions. Munro is not a very able boater, and his advice is often bad. He thinks that tipping a canoe is just inevitable, rather then something to be avoided through planning and skill. Perhaps his canoe was just too small for the size of his party, but capsizing three times in one short day's float is a sign something is wrong -- not merely something all boaters should expect to "deal with."

He doesn't seem to understand that even when the water level is low, there is generally a deep channel somewhere in the stream bed if only you find it and stay in it. This isn't true everywhere and always, but it is often enough the case that every paddler should seek a deeper channel before getting out and dragging their canoe.

Finally, he suggests that the act of paddling is simple and obvious and there's nothing much to say about it. One wonders if perhaps he and his partners might have stayed upright more often if they knew their J-strokes a little better.

So, get your canoeing and camping prowess somewhere else, and buy Munro's book for his fun commentary about local history.
