Has anyone used the Shades S.P. Canoe Campgrounds? Is the ten dollar fee per person, or site? What types of sites are they (sand/grass/rock/)? Any good fishing near the campgrounds? Do they allow open fires? Thanks

I have! The campground is very convenient for an overnighter of Sugar Creek. I would imagine the fee is per site, but if I recall correctly the ranger never showed up to collect our fee so it ended up being free. We were the only group there as it was fairly early in the season (early May) but I gathered from someone I talked to at Shades that the campground is not typically very busy at any time.

The campground is basically a circular level mowed grassy area. It appeared that there might be room for about 8 to 10 tents placed pretty close together, but there are no opportunities for seclusion if there did happen to be multiple groups. As far as I know, there's no restriction on fires but I would call someone at Shades and get the final answer. One other advantage of that campground is that it's just down a hill along a service road from the backpacking campground which has a pit toilet and a water faucet where you can fill up on water.

Here is a recent photo (taken 5/25/2008) of the camp entrance from the creek. I've never camped there but I have thought about trying it sometime.
